“Investigated by various government authorities”

Indian company, Ringing Bells released its Freedom 251 smartphone, the world’s cheapest smartphone. The features include a 4-inch display, 1.3-GHz quad-core processor and 8 GB of storage and this smartphone is sold for only $4!

Various government authorities see this $4 smartphone as a scam that they investigate it. The reason is even using the cheapest components, the cost to produce at least will be $40.

This $4 smartphone receives so many criticisms. Ringing Bells has been receiving so many comments from phone calls and emails, and they decided not respond them. From a couple tests, it is shown that the phone’s home screen icons have been ripped straight from Apple’s iOS, an obvious copyright violation.

What is the case?

The phone could be subsidized by the Indian government. Another arguments maybe a manufacturer could be dumping phones that failed safety tests or a Chinese company eager to enter the Indian market could be selling phones for cheap.

On the other hand, Ringing Bells stated publicly that the phones will be made in India without government subsidies. But, in contrast, the prototypes was launched by Indian company, Adcom. Adcom is a company that imports tech products, but does not manufacture them. This situation leads to a suggestion that this $4 smartphones are most likely imported from China.
